Key Skills for Players
The most important skill for any player to develop is a strong first touch on the ball. Ball control is foundational—it is the cornerstone for everything else a player can achieve on the field.
Keeping Practices Engaging and Fun
I live by the saying, “What you see is what you coach.” The energy and excitement I bring to practice often sets the tone for what you ultimately see play out on the field. I design sessions to be purposeful, educational, and fun, creating an environment where players can experiment, test limits, and develop their individual skills so that when it matters, they have the tools necessary to take control of games in critical moments.
Expectations for Players On and Off the Field
I expect players to represent themselves, our team, and our club with respect, kindness, and integrity. I expect hard work, a willingness to embrace challenges, and a willingness to share a joy derived from the struggle itself. I want my team to believe that in order to achieve personal and collective greatness, we must continually push our minds and bodies to their limits. Team unity is essential, and players should support, strengthen, and protect each other because the whole of the team is greater than the sum of its parts. Strong relationships are the foundation of any successful team and is by far the most valuable gift a team sport can teach.
Player Development Across Ages
Player development is multi-faceted, focusing on four key areas: Technical, Tactical, Physical, and Psychological. Older players focus on tactical and physical development, building on their technical foundation. For younger players, the emphasis is on technical skills and psychological growth, helping them explore and unlock their unique soccer DNA through trial and error—while having as much FUN as possible.
Handling Motivation and Team Challenges
Clear, consistent communication is the backbone of a healthy team culture. I work closely with players and parents to establish a shared vision, define team values, and set expectations. By creating a fun, positive, and mastery-oriented environment, I aim to reward effort and improvement. Often, challenges stem from how players perceive success. By emphasizing the learning process over the outcome of winning or losing, motivation increases, and doubt and stress transform into purpose and drive.
Advice for Players
My advice for players looking to improve their game is to become a true student of soccer: love it, learn it, and live it. Be intentional with your training—celebrate small gains, give yourself grace, trust the process, and stay committed. Most importantly, believe in yourself and your potential!
